14. The Handmaiden

The Nice Guys
CJ Entertainment

Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) turns in yet another demented, compulsively watchable masterwork with this searing erotic thriller set in 1930s South Korea.

The less you know about the story going in the better, as The Handmaiden is a movie packed with devilish twists and turns intended to keep audiences on their toes and unsure of quite where things are going.

With immaculate period detail and gorgeous cinematography from Chung Chung-hoon, not to mention a terrific ensemble of performances, this is a sizzling effort from one of South Korea's hottest directors, even if the film likely won't reach the iconic levels of Oldboy or Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
