Spike Lee delivered his most affecting and unflinching film in years with this mind-blowing true story of a black police officer attempting to remotely infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan.

Lee smartly appreciates the absurdity of such a concept, no matter its truth, and makes his film at once a bone-rattling thriller and a darkly hilarious comedy.

John David Washington - son of Denzel - and Adam Driver absolutely knock it out of the park in the lead roles, but everyone is on fire here. Topher Grace deserves special recognition for his brilliant portrayal of KKK leader David Duke.

Lee keeps a firm handle on his tone here, refusing to make the racists caricatures and instead dealing with their ugliness upfront, while building up to a sledgehammer-to-the-balls of an ending.

It's Lee's best film in decades, honestly.
