20 Films That Are Guaranteed To Haunt Your Dreams

The Thing Film has incredible potential when it comes to displaying things that the viewer never thought they would ever see in their lives or just didn't know existed in the first place. For this reason there are many films that feature moments so disturbing and odd that they will etch themselves into your mind forever. While that may sound bad, not every film on this list got its place because it has scenes of horror. In fact, only about half of the movies listed here are actually horror films. There are many ways that a film can haunt you and I wanted to present a little bit of diversity when selecting which movies made the cut and which didn't. Sometimes the most frightening things in the world are just ideas or beliefs and the cinema is a great place for filmmakers to exercise the more psychological elements of life. The 20 movies presented here will haunt you for a wide variety of reasons whether it's because they show something horrifying or plant an idea in your mind that you can't shake. Be prepared to sleep with the lights on tonight and read on to see 20 films that are guaranteed to haunt your dreams.

20. Mulholland Dr.

Mulholland Dr This entry could basically be title "anything by David Lynch" by I chose to get a little more specific. While it is true that Lynch has made a career out of making deeply disturbing movies Mulholland Dr. is the most effective. Everything about the film will stick with you long after the credits have rolled. The story is especially poignant since it is a mystery that probably can't be solved even though Lynch claims that it can. The narrative is like a seedy, nightmarish version of The Big Sleep in that it is incredibly convoluted but also very perplexing. The lead performances by Naomi Watts and Laura Harring are perfectly Lynchian. They are ethereal and strange but at their core they are fascinating. Also, no discussion of Mulholland Dr. is complete without mention of the man behind the Winkies because it is a scene that will most definitely haunt you.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
