Potter Actors Featured: Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Imelda Staunton

Ang Lee's critically acclaimed take on Jane Austen's 1811 novel of the same name stars Emma Thompson (who also wrote the script) as Elinor Dashwood, with a young Kate Winslet cast as her younger sister Marianne. The story follows the wealthy Dashwood family as they attempt to deal with their sudden destitution by securing favourable marriages for their daughters.

Their suitors are played by quintessential Englishman Hugh Grant and the late, great Alan Rickman (Severus Snape, of course). Rickman's character Colonel Brandon falls for Marianne at first sight, though she sees him as an old bachelor incapable of inspiring love. Thompson herself praised her future Potter colleague's sweet-natured performance, calling it a detour from the Machiavellian types he also knew how to play so effectively.

The third and final future Hogwarts teacher on show here was Imelda Staunton, who fell victim to the curse of the Defence Against the Dark Arts job as Professor Umbridge. She portrays Charlotte, the youngest daughter of Mrs. Jennings and wife to the unpleasant Mr. Palmer. She hosts both the sisters Dashwood as well as Colonel Brandon at her mansion in a mini period Potter fest.
