20 Great Movies Since 2000 That You Forgot Existed

20. 25th Hour (2003)

It's not like 25th Hour was completely ignored in the wake of its release in 2003, but it's very much the definition of a movie that seemed to have been forgotten and - as a result - remains largely unappreciated. As an exploration of New York after the events of 9/11, and as a showcase for the acting talents of Edward Norton, who delivers what is arguably the finest performance of his career, 25th Hour is gripping, angry, intense and emotionally resonant. Written and directed by Spike Lee, the plot focuses on a former drug dealer and his last day of freedom before he begins a seven-year jail sentence. Though there are a few jarring moments, none of them come close to derailing what is an immensely powerful drama. It might also be the best film ever made about the aftermath of 9/11; that alone makes it essential viewing.
