20 Hidden Sci-Fi Movie Gems To Watch On Netflix

15. The Colony

On the other end of the spectrum believability-wise, The Colony nonetheless managed to sign on some even bigger stars than The Machine did: this Canadian sci-fi-horror counts Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton amongst its stars. And it€™s the stars who make it, shuttling along what otherwise might have been a bit of a naff Thing rip-off. Set in a snow-swept 2045 where Global Warming has gone out of control and humans have to go live in underground bunkers because the icy environs above are uninhabitable. So far, so surprisingly inventive as a post-apocalyptic dystopia. Then, Fishburne and Paxton hear a distress signal coming from a nearby colony. Which is when it all goes to pot, with the abandoned colony obviously covered in blood with some nasty beasty roaming around, picking off what little of humanity there is left in the first place. Again, not helped by a low budget, but the claustrophobic atmosphere, engaging world and bonafide Hollywood stars sell it.
