20 Highest Grossing Movies of 2014 - Ranked From Worst To Best

The biggest hits of the year, ranked from the awful to the awesome.

With the dust now settled on 2014, its time to look back on the year in cinema before focusing attention on the huge number of blockbuster movies set for release this year; with highly-anticipated sequels Furious 7, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Jurassic World, Terminator Genisys, Spectre, Mission: Impossible 5 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens along with a number of interesting-sounding original projects on the horizon, 2015 could well be the biggest year in history at the box office. Based on quality alone, last year was one of the best in recent history for big-budget studio movies with fans of action, comedy, sci-fi and superheroes all having plenty to choose from at the multiplex. However, from a box office perspective 2014 was a disappointment; a large number of titles under-performed domestically, and for the first time since 2009 only one movie managed to cross the elusive billion-dollar mark (and that was largely thanks to a massive helping hand from the increasingly-important Chinese market). With that in mind, this article will ignore all of the number-crunching and instead rank the 20 biggest box office hits of 2014 from worst to best. There's a surprising amount of diversity to be found when looking through the year's commercial successes; of course there are a fair share of comic book movies, reboots and sequels but there is also a refreshing number of original features, something that is unfortunately becoming increasingly rare in franchise-driven Hollywood. Do you agree with the list? How would you have ranked 2014's biggest hits? As always, sign off in the comments below.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
