Though the box office for the third entry into the new Apes trilogy fell far short of its predecessor, the more important thing is that it's one hell of a movie that's going to endure for years if not decades as one of the smartest and most technically accomplished blockbusters ever made.

Andy Serkis gives a magnificent performance in conjunction with Weta Digital's mind-blowingly good visual effects layout, while Matt Reeves again proves himself to be one of the best tentpole directors working today in a tonally perfect, bleakly beautiful finale to Caesar's story.

Wherever the franchise goes from here, nobody can take away War's stature as a muscular, thoughtful, emotionally resonant sci-fi classic.
