In fairness, the blockbuster movie genre as a whole isn't one particularly renowned for its acting: the focus generally falls on insane special effects and outrageous set-pieces. That said, the comic book genre can't help but deliver some eye-catching performances, given the endlessly iconic characters which are being portrayed. These 20 performances helped shape the landscape of the comic book film as we know it today, either through their excellence, their controversial nature, or the way in which they managed to spark a trend that continues today. Whether hero, villain or sidekick, these 20 characters had incredible life breathed into them by these performers, and continually set the bar higher than it had ever been. In most cases these performances ended up making the movie, a testament to the fact that, though these movies may spend hundreds of millions on awe-inspiring special effects, what's a comic book movie without plenty of heart and compelling performances?
