19. "To Absent Friends" - Star Trek Beyond

When Star Trek Beyond's climactic scene, a birthday celebration for Kirk (Chris Pine) where he toasts "to absent friends", was being filmed, nobody could've imagined quite how bittersweet it would be for audiences.

Of course, Leonard Nimoy passed away before shooting began, and so the sentiment was aimed solely at him, but then Anton Yelchin died a month before the movie's release, and those three words took on a whole other meaning.

It's enhanced by the fact that the shot then cuts to the crowd of party guests, and of course, Yelchin's Chekov can be seen among them. It's a devastating moment and ends the movie on a reflective note without getting overly dour.
