19. The Wild One (1953)
Back in 1953, the concept of the teenager and the young person was in its infancy. New markets were opening up for these age groups in movies, music and other cultural domains. Parents were getting very worried. They feared the new style rock and roll, they didn't want teenagers to have films espousing their own culture. When Marlon Brando appeared on the screen as young rebel motorbike gang leader called Johnny, parents got very alarmed indeed with his boorish behaviour. The most controversial scene in the movie is undoubtedly where Johnny is at a dance and a girl asks him "What are you rebelling against?" and Johnny answers "Whatddaya got?". This nihilism was regarded as being deeply impressionable upon young people, inciting them to all sorts of terrible behaviour. The Wild One was banned by the BBFC until 1967 when it finally got an X certificate.
