Last month, La La Land became the third movie in history to score an insane 14 Academy Award nominations, making it just one of three to do so.

While racking up a ton of nods is never a guaranteed path to Best Picture success, it sure doesn't hurt, considering that the majority of these 20 movies, the most nominated in history, did end up winning the big one.

These films, from barely-known today to hugely iconic masterworks, span more than eight decades of Hollywood history. Some are much-loved Oscar darlings film fans generally agree on, while others have ironically become ostracised for being what some deem "overrated."

Still, nobody can take away the fact that these films landed at least 12 nominations each, regardless of how well they might (or might not) hold up today.

Here are the 20 most Oscar-nominated movies ever ranked from worst to best...

Willam Wyler's World War II drama sadly hasn't aged particularly well, largely viewed today as a frothy propaganda piece intended to foster positive feeling in the midst of WWII.

Many of its affectations now play as absurd, but at the same time it's worth watching for Greer Garson's entertaining lead performance and Wyler's typically stirring direction.

It benefits from a certain lived-in feel that helps audiences imagine what it'd be like living in a wartime scenario, but the fact this beat out Orson Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons for Best Picture is hilarious in retrospect.
