Though the Hollywood sausage factory might seem like a woefully predictable beast, where the best and worst movies from any given year can be predicted a mile off, isn't it interesting when a movie's critical response takes an unexpected turn nobody saw coming?

Whether surprisingly enjoyable films everyone thought would suck or seemingly sure-things that fell disappointingly short of expectations, these 20 movies all defied most sensible and reasonable Tomatometer predictions, to the shock of just about everyone.

A year ago, it would've been unthinkable to consider most of these movies faring as well or as badly as they ultimately did with critics, but as proof that sometimes Hollywood can surprise us - albeit as often for worse as for better - these films and their precious percentage scores undeniably got everyone talking.

It just makes one wonder: which awful-looking movies in 2018 could transcend expectations, and which seemingly awesome movies from respected filmmakers and franchises might take a sudden tumble?

When you consider that, keep these 20 surprising critical receptions from the past year firmly in mind...

20. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 52%

After the first Kingsman movie scored a rock solid 74% with critics, it seemed like director Matthew Vaughn was in a prime position to deliver a bigger-budget, all-star sequel that would at least match if not surpass the original.

As it turned out, despite boasting a litany of over-the-top action and a stacked cast of Hollywood talents, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a depressing example of franchise excess, where a sequel throws everything at the wall in an attempt to one-up its predecessor, but lacks the original's finesse and uniqueness.

Widely criticised for its bloated run-time, bizarre misuse of actors such as Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore and Pedro Pascal, and risque humour seemingly intended solely to offend, The Golden Circle was one of the year's most crushing disappointments.
