20 Most Unfairly Hated Movies Of The 21st Century

18. Crash (2004)

Watchmen Blue
Lionsgate

Why It's Hated: While a lot of people abuse Crash for being an apparently over-simplified, condescending look at racial tensions, most of the ire stems from the fact that it beast the arguably more deserving Brokeback Mountain for the Best Picture Oscar.

Even Jack Nicholson couldn't mask his surprise when opening the award envelope.

Why It's Unfair: Crash may not be the most deserving Best Picture winner, but if you strip away all of the awards nonsense, it's actually a totally rock solid character-driven drama with excellent performances, a terrific musical score and solid direction by Paul Haggis.

It's not subtle, but it's also not patronising like its critics claim. It seems like a lot of the haters have clung to the idea that it's too simple-minded largely to make themselves feel better about Brokeback not winning.

It's a sturdy, populist drama, and that's all it needs to be.
