The Film

2004's U.S. horror hit The Grudge was itself a remake of the 2002 Japanese cult horror flick Ju-on, and led to two sequels (with 2009's The Grudge 3 ultimately going straight-to-video).

Almost a decade after the first remake franchise went dormant, Columbia Pictures announced they were developing a second remake of Ju-on, which recently began shooting and is due for an August 16, 2019 release.

This time around, The Grudge will be set in the U.S. rather than Japan, while Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother) directs, and the cast includes Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Lin Shaye and Jacki Weaver.

Is It A Good Idea?

To be honest, neither Ju-on nor the first American remake are great movies, so with the talented cast and crew this take has assembled, there's definitely potential for it to be the best of the three.

Pesce has a real knack for atmosphere, so it ultimately comes down to the script and whether or not Columbia is going to allow Pesce to bring his art-house sensibilities with him or just turn him into a hired gun.

It's not an inherently bad idea, so cautious optimism feels like the right outlook here.
