Around the same time that he was announced as the lead of the new Vacation movie, Ed Helms was also attached to a remake/reboot of The Naked Gun, because Hollywood loves 80s retreads.

Officially classed as a sort of rebootquel, the new Naked Gun will apparently focus on Helms as a relative of Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin. And don't worry if you think the originals are too funny, because this one isn't going to be a spoof for some reason.

It's been in development since 2013, and for now the trail is a little cold, but it hasn't been officially dropped.

Is It A Good Idea?

Why the hell it's even a Naked Gun movie remains to be seen. If it's not going to be funny, it's not going to be Naked Gun - it's as simple as that. It could literally be any bog-standard cop comedy, rather than inviting direct comparisons that will ultimately heap too much pressure on it.

But don't worry too much, because there's some question of whether this will even happen...

"That’s a conversation that’s been happening, it’s kind of in the grinding gears of Hollywood. … You have to make something that a contemporary audience is going to like. We haven’t seen many of those slapstick movies in a while, so I’m not sure what the right angle is on it."
