2012 Films: 5 Awesome Blockbusters and 5 That Sucked

5 Awesome Blockbusters:

5. Prometheus

Prometheus Ridley Scott€™s Robin Hood went through various stages of development, starting off as a Russell Crowe headed piece, with him playing both the titular outlaw and the Sheriff of Nottingham, then a re-imagining putting the sheriff as the hero, until we got the rather bland and typical retelling of the myth. Although Scott€™s follow up, Prometheus, is certainly more successful in its aims, it also went through the same level of creative turmoil. Originally an all out Alien prequel (or prequels), Scott must have regretted his initial openness, with fan€™s bemoaning the film on release for its lack of connection to the series. However, watching Prometheus on its own merits as a big, explosive yet thoughtful sci-fi, it can€™t fail to impress. On a technical level, it looks brilliant, with a great merging of practical and computer generated effects and the key cast bring their all (Fassbender and Theron deserve particular praise as Weyland€™s two €˜children€™). As a story, it is intriguing and brings up big questions without forcing an answer on us; a fault all too common with €˜smart€™ movies. Sure, you could pick faults €“ it€™s incredibly open ended and it's hard to buy Guy Pearce as a hundred year old €“ but they€™re minor gripes amongst this grand picture. And as far as connections go, everything needed for Alien to make sense is there, just not spelled out; a key technique writer Damon Lindelof first used to infuriatingly successful effect in Lost.
