2013 Superhero Movies: Predicting Worst To Best

url-2 It's that time again! Yes, it is now just a few days until I can grab some friends and hit up the a screening of Iron Man 3. The first big superhero film of 2013 is looming around the corner. To make matters even sweeter, the new Man of Steel trailer has just hit and we know that the trailer for the new Thor will be hitting US theaters alongside the new Iron Man . With that in mind I thought it would be fitting to look over the impending platter of comic delights we will be seeing on the screen over the coming months. Each year it seems we get a more diverse range of works hitting our screens. With the recent popularity explosions that The Avengers and Batman have enjoyed, this certainly hasn't changed. I would note that I'm looking forward to each of the films on this list. I can confidently say that all six have the potential to be awesome films. Therefore, my predictions are not so much a best-to-worst list but a good-to-even better list. The order is entirely based on what I've learned of these films so far and is all my own opinion (please don't eat me alive fan-boys). So without further ado, let's start with my least anticipated.

6. RED 2

RED 2 Does RED count as a superhero film? Probably not really. But I'm shoving it under that blanket term anyway (because they are heroes in a way...right?) I promise the next five fit a lot more closely. I've heard RED get a lot of unnecessary flack since its release. Then again what movies don't get flack on the IMDB message boards these days? But I thought RED was actually a pretty fun action-comedy film! Based on a comic series originating from DC, RED followed the high-jinks of some retired, extremely dangerous CIA agents. It's a pretty basic concept really but was executed well enough. John Malkovich was the treat of the film. He provided a unique source of humour that I was always looking forward to seeing in a scene. Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren also turned in watchable performances as well, even if the former two didn't do a hell of a lot that we hadn't seen them do before. The film was well received and made adequate box-office so it's no surprise that we're getting a sequel. RED 2 will be missing some of its predecessor's talent. Mr Freeman's character didn't survive the first outing and Karl Urban is (unfortunately) left out of the proceedings this time around. Watching the trailer, I did find some worrying prospects in the uninspired casting of Catherine-Zeta Jones and some lame one-liners. But I couldn't stop myself from smiling as Malkovich came on screen. Can you really sit through the last shot of the trailer where Malkovich nonchalantly disregards a living body in his trunk without at least chuckling? I'm thinking this one has the potential to be another fun little romp. But it also has a largely unknown director and source material that could be easily misinterpreted. I can't ignore that it has the potential to go sour. Expected rating: 6/10 RED 2 comes out 19th July 2013
