22 Fantastic Beasts & Harry Potter Characters Who Are Related

JK Rowling's Wizarding World is connected in LOTS of different, subtle ways.

It goes without saying that the Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter films are tied closely together. Both are best-considered towers in the larger Hogwarts that is JK Rowling's Wizarding World, after all and there may well be more stories added to this universe before it ends. Given how much money they make, that much seems assured.

Like Quentin Tarantino, JK Rowling has made it her business to tie her films together in ways that feel organic through their shared history. Some characters in one will appear incidentally in the other (like McGonagall) and some characters in Harry Potter's time will have ancestors pop up in the earlier timeframe of Fantastic Beasts.

It's those characters we're most interested in as they tie the worlds together and some of the links might not be immediately obvious even to the biggest Potter fans...

WARNING: SPOILERS WITHIN!!

8. McLaggen & Cormac McLaggen

Now this one isn't 100% confirmed, because IMDB has spelled the Fantastic Beasts McLaggen's name differently to his potential ancestor, but there's no way JK Rowling would have mistakenly used a different, similar name when she was so taken with the McLaggen name initially that she knew she HAD to put it in Harry Potter.

Cormac McLaggen is of course Ron's big rival in Harry Potter - the potential goalkeeper for Gryffindor and also a rival suitor to Hermione - as well as being one of the Slug Club. He is presumably related to the student of Dumbledore's from the 1920s (probably his grandson) who has the honour of duelling with Dumbledore before their lesson on Boggarts.
