It's not often that the Marvel Cinematic Universe manages to successfully blindside viewers with a genuine surprise, but it certainly did in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

When Peter (Tom Holland) heads to Liz's (Laura Harrier) house, her dad answers the door, revealing himself to be Adrian Toomes aka Vulture (Michael Keaton), much to Peter and the audience's shock.

What follows is a terrifically prolonged sequence of Toomes toying with Peter, leading to the already-iconic "dad talk", where he outright threatens him.

Considering how obvious the reveal seems in retrospect, it's all the more impressive that it came as such a surprise on the initial viewing. Thanks to sharp writing and terrific execution, it's one of the best and most unexpected sequences from any MCU movie this year.
