Fritz Lang's landmark psychological thriller might have been the director's favourite of his own works, but it wasn't universally loved when it was first released, with critical acclaim coming over the decades since its release.

What cannot be denied is the fact that Peter Lorre is on incredible form as the anguished, tormented killer, despite it being only his first role. Nor can anything but praise be heaped on Lang's eye for innovation: M is a triumph of pushing visual boundaries and making every shot as striking as possible. Even more than 80 years on, it looks incredibly fresh and it's the kind of thing critics absolutely lap up.

In this case, the audience agrees too.
