28 WTF Moments From Batman & Robin

25. All That Terrible Casting

And where to begin with the insanely tone-deaf, misguided casting throughout this movie? George Clooney filling in for Val Kilmer as Batman is probably the least-questionable choice of the core cast: he's got the chin and his voice fits, but he was blatantly cast because he was the Next Big Thing, before he'd really proven himself on the cinematic stage, and at times he barely emotes at all. Then there's Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, and to be fair, he and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy are the only two actors in the film who really lean into the campiness and make it clear they know what they're starring in. It just so happens that what they're starring in is a pile of hot garbage, sadly. Finally, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl? Unconvincing at best. Nothing against her as an actress personally, but her post-Clueless airhead typecasting made her a poor fit and not one she really sought to defy here.
