Though it's practically impossible to imagine anyone but Jack Nicholson embodying Tim Burton's Joker, Warner Bros. considered a number of other performers for the part, such as Willem Dafoe, Tim Curry, David Bowie, Robert De Niro and even Jeff Goldblum.

When the studio eventually offered The Joker to Nicholson, he wasn't quite convinced by the project, and amid his hesitation, Warner Bros. reached out to Robin Williams, who quickly accepted the role.

However, they were ultimately only using Williams as a pawn to cement the coveted nature of the role and hasten Nicholson signing on, which he duly did. Understandably, Williams was infuriated at being used in such a fashion, and refused to work with Warner Bros. again until they apologised.

Williams got his "revenge" a few years later, though, as when he was offered the part of The Riddler in Batman Forever, he duly turned it down.
