4 Ways Don Jon Shows Joseph Gordon-Levitt Will Be A Great Filmmaker (And 4 Things He Needs to Fix)

Don Jon 1 Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an impossible person. He began acting professionally at age 7, and within a few years was one of the lead actors on the successful sitcom 3rd Rock From the Sun. He survived child stardom and made the leap to movies, mostly starring in independent projects like Mysterious Skin and Brick, both of which shattered any semblance to his TV days. After the amazing (500) Days of Summer, JGL (it's easier than writing out his full name) became a hot commodity and was soon in major studio films such as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and Lincoln. If that weren't enough, in 2010 JGL launched HitRecord.org (hitRECord). What started a few years earlier as a place for him and his brother Dan to upload their own videos became an "open collaborative production company" that anyone can join. Artists of all kinds - animators, musicians, poets, screenwriters, etc - could upload their own work and collaborate with other members to create projects or "records". In the past three years, they've released numerous books and music albums and right now they are working on a TV series for the Pivot Network. On top of this, JGL is a pretty talented musician himself, as you probably saw in the viral video of him and Zooey Deschanel singing together. Also, he's a good looking guy. I've got no problem saying it. I have been known on more than six occasions to refer to him as Joseph Gordon-Handsome. So yeah, he's an impossible person. But JGL is yet to conquer the fields of screenwriting and directing. He looks to put a change to that soon with the release of his directorial debut Don Jon, a comedy about a porn addict looking for love. Will JGL be the next great filmmaker? I was lucky enough to attend an early screening of Don Jon, and I've come to the conclusion that JGL could be a great filmmakers, but has a few kinks to work out. Here are 4 things JGL did right with Don Jon, and 4 things that he needs to fix in future ventures... Note: I don't intend to spoil any of the film here, but I will be speaking about specific scenes from Don Jon in detail. If you really wish to know nothing about the movie beforehand, come back and read this once you've seen it.
