5 Contemporary Norwegian Films Worth Watching

4. Trolljegeren (Troll Hunter)

Year €“ 2010, Director €“ André ˜vredal, Starring €“ Otto Jespersen, Hans Morten Hansen, Tomas Alf Larsen, Johanna Mørck, Knut Nærum. Another light-hearted film (albeit with dark overtones), this time in the form of a mockumentary, Troll Hunter mixes established comedians and unknown actors in a film that focuses on one of the more well-known elements of Norse mythology €“ trolls. The film portrays the beasts in an antagonistic manner, pitting them against a group of film students who intend to make a documentary about Otto Jesperson€™s character, the titular Troll Hunter, who actions are sanctioned by a government agency determined to keep the existence of the beasts a secret. Compared by critics to The Blair Witch Project for its €˜found footage€™ elements, the film also explores the concept of religion in modern society, analysing how apathy is now the prevailing attitude amongst most Norwegians. Nominated for a string of minor awards, with remake rights acquired by director Chris Columbus, Troll Hunter is an interesting insight into an element of foreign folklore, and though slightly too long in running time, makes for compelling viewing.
