5 Directors Who Could Make A Great Aquaman Movie

2. Darren Aronofsky

aronofsky Darren Aronofsky has shown a great deal of interest in DC's properties over the years, and is a name that has cropped up on shortlists several times for big superhero projects. He almost directed an adaptation of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One in the early 2000's, but that project fell apart and eventually became Batman Begins. He then nearly directed 2013's The Wolverine, but left the film due to scheduling conflicts. His name then came up when talk of a Batman reboot and Justice League film surfaced in 2013... but with Zack Snyder landing the directing gig for both Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League (with Ben Affleck likely to take over the reigns of the next solo Batman film), he may have to shift gears and take on a different DC character instead. How about Aquaman? His work on films like The Fountain and this year's Noah show that he can handle the effects needed for a project like that, and his varied and impressive filmography of character-driven dramas speaks for itself. Noah - which was not just an adaptation of the biblical story, but of a graphic novel interpretation that he himself wrote in collaboration with Niko Henrichon - specifically showed that Aronofsky could adapt high-concept, fantastical elements and imbue them with his award-nominated dramatic talents. He may have never been given the chance to make his Batman movie, but perhaps Aquaman could be the next best thing.
