5 Reasons Clerks Defines The 90s

5. The Wardrobe

The 90s, like any other decade, was full of signature wardrobe styles that would get you laughed out of parties today. Bright colors were in, plaid was in, flannel was in, etc. Everyone wanted to look either grungy or spiffy. It'd be tough to turn on Clerks and not know it came from the 90s based on the clothes alone. The first wardrobe shot that gives the period away in the film is when Dante is getting ready at the beginning of the story and we see him slap on a pair of Dr. Martens. Only in the 90s would a store clerk that cares little for style or appearance pop on a pair of Docs. Today, Dr. Martens shoes either run pricey in used vintage clothing stores or the actual Dr. Martens shop. Either way, they are considered more of a high class style today than when Dante wore them. It would take approximately one full Quick Stop paycheck to pay for those boots today. The next popular 90s wardrobe caught on camera in Clerks is that of the button-up shirt over the t-shirt look. BOTH Dante and Randal are guilty of this modern day fashion crime. It was an easy way to look cool and hip two decades ago, but today one would look foolish for caring to wear an extra button-up shirt for the sake of style.
