5 Reasons Why We Don't Need Ghostbusters 3

2. A New Film Would Likely Take Style Over Substance

Columbia PicturesThere's quite a bit of special effects work in the first two films, but they never overpower the narratives or the characters, which is a huge part of what makes them work. In today's day and age, it seems almost inevitable that a new film would be compelled to overcompensate with its special effects for the sake of keeping people from feeling the need to check their cell phones and text in theaters. Even further, the introduction of a new group of Ghostbusters might rely more heavily on increased humor in an attempt to endear them quicker to audiences impatient over the more naturalistic breathing room the first films had in their ability to blend humor with character moments and action. The series never felt like -- and still doesn't feel like -- it was all about how much of the budget could be thrown on screen or how many laughs could be produced as quickly as possible. There's a natural, laid back charm, particularly with the first film, that a third film could very easily fail to capture to its detriment in its efforts to keep the attention of those among us who can't spend two hours without social media.
