5 Rubbish Movie Dads Who Go On To Redeem Themselves

4. Homer Simpson - The Simpsons Movie

simps We all know and love Homer Simpson. He has many, many flaws and imperfections but that's what makes him so easy to relate to and funny to watch. So it came as a surprise to me and a few other people I talked to that, in this film, he is not so much a lovable oaf as a complete A-hole for large portions. Throughout most of the course of this film he is actually very difficult to like, especially due to the way he treats his family, notably Bart. After dooming Springfield to life under a giant dome, Homer and the Simpsons are able to escape but despite the chance at a second life Homer is still a jerk and the final straw comes when he refuses to go back to his hometown with Marge to save their neighbours from a bomb. Homer manages to piss most of the characters off in this film but a lot of attention is given to his relationship with Bart. The pair start off well, but fall out to such an extent that Bart even buries his dad in an avalanche. With the help of "boob lady" he sees the error of his ways and heads back to Springfield arriving just in time to ride a motorbike up the dome - with Bart in tow - and hurl the bomb out. But Bart almost doesn't agree to help, choosing instead to stay with the Flanders's. This preceeds a smile-raising moment where Homer shows he does care about his son. "I'll let you hold the bomb." "Hey, the man knows me!" A lot of people were skeptical about a Simpsons movie and not everyone liked it, but I think the way the characters were explored and made more complex when the writers had more than 25 minutes to fill was very well done.
