What makes a film not a stoner film but like a stoner film? That is the question. Of course, there's a wide selection of films in the stoner film genre to choose from, but if you've seen all of those or just fancy a change, what to watch now? The best kind of stoner films are the ones you stumble across, probably very, very late at night and cannot wait to tell like, everyone about, as soon as you see them. When choosing your film, you want something that enhances the experience and takes you on a journey albeit a comical one with lots fluff (mainly, unless you're in documentary mood.) Yet it still has to have some kind of moral dilemma and the golden rule is lots of one-liners that you and your friends can repeat to each other afterwards, all the time. So here's a short list of just a small portion of what's out there. I suggest good friends, good munchies and these great films.
5. Galaxy Quest
Okay, where do I even start with Galaxy Quest? It's like every sci-fi nerd's dream, space, time and Alan Rickman all rolled into one. Whilst at a convention the aging cast of well-known, now defunct show Galaxy Quest start to slowly realise everything they acted is actually real when an alien race needs their help.
Why it should be a stoner film: Epically cheesy one-liners and spoof-filled action complete dodgy deep space special effects and costumes make for a funny watch. The deluded cast member's backstories will also give you something to chew over if you're looking for a thoughtful film and a heart-warming we-did-it end will leave you feeling all fuzzy inside. Even if you're not into sci-fi, this is still worth a try. Pretty light on the technical aspects, this film speaks to seasoned nerds and geeks as well as the occasional sci-fi fan. Highly underrated and utterly quotable, be prepared for some deep conversations about the perception of reality, maan. Never give up, never surrender!
Memorable Line: "I'm not even supposed to be here. I'm just 'Crewman Number Six.' I'm expendable. I'm the guy in the episode who dies to prove how serious the situation is. I've gotta get outta here!" A special nod goes to Mathesar played by Enrico Colantoni, who will crack you up with a look alone, I guarantee.
