4. During His Gap Year He Taught At A Tibetian Monestary
Really, he did. This is the kind of thing that films parody when they are painting the nicest of figures who can do no wrong. While I wouldn't go that far, the thought of Cumberbatch teaching at a Tibetian monastery doesn't hurt his image in my mind. I like to pretend it is like the beginning of Ace Ventura 2 and that he learnt eternal oneness. Alas, it was not the case. He only spent his time teaching English in Tibet and it was on his 'finding himself' gap year. During the same year in India, he nearly died from mountain sickness. He told The Times that:
"We were woefully underprepared. I had simply an extra scarf my mother knitted me and a piece of cheese."
On the way down the mountain he began to hallucinate about the stars turning into lightening and was at risk of an aneurism. While it is not a rare that actors have stories of near death experiences, they usually involve some sort of daring stunt malfunction. Instead this story is just about a young British boy trying to scale a mountain and being horrifically underprepared.
