58. High Fidelity (2000) - Stephen Frears

High Fidelity (2000) - Stephen FrearsRob, a record store owner and compulsive list maker, recounts his top five breakups, including the one in progress I have a lot of similarities with Rob from High Fidelity. I analyse everything about my life, occasionaly making lists of the things I enjoy, giving everything a rank order (proof of that is this list). I obsess about movies the way he obsesses about music and talk about them all day long to people who would care to listen. My DVD collection is in genre/director order but I will constantly more it around or change it around if i'm going through a hard time or if i'm worrying about something like he does. If something happens that gets me down or upset, movies will be what I turn to for comfort. Then again I can relate to Jack Black's character also, the know it all obnoxious music store worker who believes his opinion over music should dictate everybody elses. He will argue with people and tell them that they are wrong to like certain records over others and tell them where to go rather than take their money on what he believes are shitty records. I can get like that sometimes. John Cusack is perfect as Rob, talking directly to the camera, narrating the troubles in his life bluntly to us. We feel his pain as he can never seem to get exicted enough about the women he is with, until they have left his life and he has to try and win them back. Nick Hornby's High Fidelity is one of my favourite books ever written... and i enjoy the film just as much, a nice rarity for novel adaptations. It's a shame that it looks like Frears won't be shooting The Time Traveller's Wife, his attention for detail and his respect for the story's original form would have been perfect for that book.
