Following the seemingly cursed voyage of the ship that inspired Herman Melville’s classic book about whale murder, Moby-Dick, In The Heart Of The Sea is the type of survival story you’ve seen many times before without anything that really sets it apart.

That is, of course, unless you count the tremendous amount of weight Chris Hemsworth lost for the role of the ship’s first mate Owen Chase. Dropping 33lbs in four weeks, he went from Thor to Skeletor to convey the brutal conditions the men experienced after the wreck of the Essex.

It’s a shame the rest of the project didn’t do much to warrant this extreme level of transformation. Heavy on spectacle and light on substance, the movie ended up gaining middling reviews which place it in a category arguably worse than outright terrible, mediocre.

Also, when asked about his role in this uninteresting saga of unlucky whalers, it didn’t help that Hemsworth compared his carefully controlled diet regimen to the experience of starving to death on the open sea:

“Losing the weight to this length, I just never want to do it again, but it had such an emotional effect on us... in some small way, we felt like we were doing what these men went through justice."
