7 Craziest Film Fan Theories (That Actually Make Total Sense)

Ubiquitous movie musical Grease follows the two main characters Danny and Sandy, who meet and fall in love on the beach one summer. Supposedly, Sandy and her parents were only visiting America from Australia for the summer, hence the summer romance storyline.

For some unexplained reason, Sandy’s parents decide they’re not returning home, and Sandy enrols in the same high school as Danny, and begins to join his circle of friends.

The story of their initial meeting that summer is told in the lyrics of ‘Summer Nights’, including a reference to Sandy getting in trouble while swimming: Danny tells his friends, “I saved her life, she nearly drowned”. From Sandy’s perspective though, all Danny was doing was “splashing around”.

So… maybe he didn’t save her life after all?

What if Sandy drowned before the film even began, and the whole narrative is her brain’s last gasps of oxygen, as she fantasises a proper relationship with her summer fling? It would explain the increasingly outlandish song and dance routines, why she and her parents inexplicably decide not to return home from vacation… and why, at the end, her and Danny climb into ‘Greased Lightning’ and literally fly away into the sky, waving goodbye to everyone.
