7 Major Problems With Batman Returns

4. The Penguin Runs For Mayor

In Batman Returns the Penguin pretends to be a good person who has no ulterior motives, and runs for Mayor of Gotham City. The people love him and it appears that he is on track to win. During this time he does everything he can to discredit Batman and have the people turn their backs on him. However, in typical Batman fashion he figures out a way to derail the Penguin€™s mayoral campaign and Batman saves the day ensuring that the people know the truth about the Penguin. Oh I€™m sorry, that€™s actually a two part episode from the 1960s Batman TV Series called €˜Hizzonner the Penguin€™. And as you can see the similarities between the ridiculed TV show and the worshipped film are pretty staggering. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l63SRpGXBHE So many people blame Joel Schumacher for turning the Batman series camp, but he didn€™t €“ Tim Burton started that long before Schumacher even had been whispered in relation to a Batman project. It€™s just that Burton did it with less fluro colours and less laser lights. But the stupidity of this storyline (um €“ why would people vote for Penguin, and why would a Mayor be able to greenlight a power plant for Max Shreck?) is on par with any of the garbage that was produced in Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. It€™s actually probably worse because at least those two movies played their ridiculousness up for laughs €“ this one tries to go straight down the middle and fails miserably.
