7 Movies You Didn't Know Were Really About...

Subtextual symbolism in seven great films.

As with most great art, the best movies have a pulsing undercurrent of subtext. Not content with simply being about what they are about, these films challenge the viewer - sometimes intentionally, sometimes not - to seek out some deeper hidden meaning, to find a facet of the film which, when located, can blow the whole thing wide open. Whether the subtextual undertones in the films of this list have been placed there intentionally by the director, or come about because of a growing academic or fan theory, it remains that they are, for the most part, subtle in their approach, subtext as opposed to primary text, with films which are obvious in their hidden messages (think Snowpiercer, for instance, a great film but one which is clear about its allegorical symbolism) ignored in favour of ones which bury it a little deeper down. Here are seven films which you might not know were, in a way, about something else entirely - you might never be able to watch them in the same vein again.
