7 Reasons The Guardians Of The Galaxy Shouldn't Be In Avengers: Infinity War

Who's going to guard the galaxy, for a start.

Luckily for us fans, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is full to the brim with tons of memorable characters. From Paul Bettany's stoic Vision to Robert Downey Jr's smart-mouthed Iron Man, it'd be quite hard to find somebody you didn't like - which makes each team-up movie a treat worth anticipating. And fortunately, the grandaddy of all those team-up movies - Avengers: Infinity War - is yet to hit our screens.

It's currently in pre-production, and as you'd expect, we're slowly being spoon-fed tiny tidbits of gossip, information and speculation, as is the norm for a film of this size. Recently, one such piece of gossip came from right within the Marvel camp itself, with Guardians of the Galaxy cohort Vin Diesel confirming that Star-Lord, Groot and the rest of the gang would be appearing in Marvel's upcoming crossover-epic.

Unfortunately, this means that Avengers: Infinity War is facing a number of problems that stem from both the volume of characters and the type of characters the movie keeps on adding. While the Guardians entering the fray may seem like a good idea on paper, in practice, it'll do more harm than good - and here are 7 big reasons why they should sit this one out...

7. James Gunn Won't Be Involved

Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn was the driving force behind that movie's success. At its heart, it was a James Gunn film, complete with his irreverent brand of humour, his dry wit and his close attention to character. In fact, Avengers helmer Joss Whedon was one of the people touting Gunn to direct, stating that his involvement gave him faith that the movie would work.

So what did Gunn have to say about the possibility of an Avengers/Guardians crossover? Quite a lot - and none of it's positive. Speaking in 2015, he stated that "we [The Guardians] really are separate from the Avengers. We have our own galaxy to save. Thinking that everything is going to come together in a perfect way is not necessarily the way it's going to happen."

In a nutshell, these characters and their stories were never meant to collide with the Avengers - that's not the way Gunn engineered his first movie, and it's almost certainly not the way he's engineering his second. If the main creative mind behind these characters is doing everything he can to keep them separate, won't an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War feel forced - at best?

The third and fourth Avengers films are in capable hands with the Russo brothers, but the Guardians are the only big MCU heroes to have been directed by one person - and there's a reason for that. It's because Gunn understands them like nobody else can, and without him, the Guardians may be handled completely incorrectly.
