7 Sequels That Changed Everything We Thought We Knew About The Villain

The greatest villains aren’t the ones who reveal all their tricks at once. The greatest villains are the ones who hold a little something back for their second, third or even thirteenth movie outing before letting you dive in and pop the cherry of their true nature, intentions and power.

They keep you guessing. They keep you hungry for more, yet terrified to see it. They keep you on the edge of your seat and they keep you coming back again and again.

Good sequels raise the stakes by doubling down on these villains with twists and reveals that have led to some of the greatest movie moments of all time. A well made sequel will enhance a bad guy, presenting the viewer with new insights into a character's history, motivations, power and vulnerability.

These transformations are what allow the villains we love to hate grow to be more than a mere ''baddie'' and feel real, pushing and gnawing at the walls of the sliver screen and worming their way out into our hearts and minds.

7. Jason Voorhees - Friday The 13th: Part 2

Whatever workout regime Jason went on after the first Friday the 13th movie, I want in on it. Jason’s transformation from drowning little kid to serial killing psychopath flipped everything we knew about the character on its head.

Not only coming back for the sequel physically transformed, Jason’s role as the franchise’s primary antagonist was established in Friday the 13th: Part 2.

The script writer from the first Friday the 13th movie Victor Miller was famously unhappy about the filmmakers' decision to make Jason Voorhees the killer in the sequels, stating: "Jason was dead from the very beginning. He was a victim, not a villain.’’ Still, look at that transformation.

Part 2 gave us the crazed, machete-wielding killing machine we know and love, with Part 3 cementing his icon hockey mask appearance. Bigger is almost always better, and big Jason is a monumental improvement over the original.
