7 Stupid Retcons That Ruined Famous Movie Franchises

One word: Midi-chlorians.

Is there anything worse than an unnecessary retcon? You know, when a writer decides to retroactively mess with the events depicted in previous movies in order to bring about a new - and almost always dumb - revelation to another work. Usually for the sake of it, because creativity is lacking or there's nothing better to do than mess with the established continuity. Because with a retcon, you are always taking a huge risk; you're screwing with something that people have invested in emotionally. And folk never take kindly to that sort of thing. The worst acts of retconning can, in fact, ruin several movies outright. When a sequel (or prequel, even) takes it upon itself to offer up new information regarding things audiences have already witnessed, shifting the perspective or forcing them to see it in a new light, it's possible to spoil everything that came before. Then it becomes impossible to look at the old movies without considering the godawful retcon that changes how you see everything. Some retcons are harmless; others are annoying, but forgivable; some just tarnish certain characters. But a few retcons have the power to ruin entire movie franchises forever...
