6. What Was The Point In The Jedi Prophecy?

The Jedi prophecy and its foretelling of the Chosen One who will balance the Force is vague, since the audience is never clued up on what this exactly entails and why it's important.

Presumably it refers to the destruction of the Sith, and although Qui-Gon Jinn's prediction that Anakin is the Chosen One looks like hogwash when he turns to the Dark Side, George Lucas has confirmed that the prophecy was fulfilled when Vader threw the Emperor into the Death Star's reactor shaft.

But, fast forward to The Force Awakens and what has really been achieved? The Jedi is all but wiped out and evil has returned to the universe in the form of non-Sith Dark Side users led by Snoke and Kylo Ren. It seems the Jedi prophecy was merely a temporary respite for a galaxy marred by conflict, so what was actually the point?

Perhaps there's a twist in this tale yet and The Last Jedi will revisit the chose one concept, revealing it to be somebody else. The movie looks like it will deal with the matter of Force balancing, which is presumably Luke's motivation for dismantling the Jedi Order, as hinted at in the trailers.

Could the balance of the Force refer to uniting the light and dark sides with the creation of a Jedi-like order that's capable of tapping into both ends of the spectrum, rather that destroying one of them?

Perhaps Rey or Kylo will be the the first member of this new breed of Force users, and turn out to be the mythical Chosen One first mentioned in The Phantom Menace.
