8 DC Villains Who Could Be More Popular Than Heath Ledger's The Joker

4. Sinestro

The first attempt at a Green Lantern movie, it's fair to say, failed pretty spectacularly. From the moment Ryan Reynolds was cast in the lead role - Hal Jordan - people became sceptical and, sure enough, it just didn't work. It did make a slight profit at the box office, but it was critically annihilated and had very few redeeming features. That said, the best thing about it was the portrayal of Sinestro. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy's Mark Strong portrayed the veteran Green Lantern who, at the end of the movie, was shown to don a Yellow Lantern ring, hinting at a possible future role in a movie as his more famous, villainous comic book self. A Green Lantern sequel could completely revamp the franchise. Reynolds wouldn't need to be involved - somebody like Dwayne Johnson could play John Stewart to give the franchise some CPR - and Sinestro could return. Given that the character was fairly popular in an otherwise pretty terrible movie, a bigger role as a the villainous leader of the Sinestro Corps in a new look sequel could make him extremely popular.
