8 DC Villains Who Could Be More Popular Than Heath Ledger's The Joker

3. Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor has already been portrayed by both Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey - two highly respected, well known actors - but has never really been as popular on the big screen as he perhaps should be. The character is to Superman what the Joker is to Batman, so it really is confusing as to why he's never been that iconic in the movies. The casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor in the upcoming Batman Vs Superman movie has caused almost as much uproar as Ben Affleck's casting as Batman, so the initial hopes of Luthor being a success in the movie seem pretty slim - but don't forget that Heath Ledger's casting as the Joker was initially scoffed at by large sections of the media and fans of the character. The point is that you shouldn't write Eisenberg off yet, because the best portrayals are often the ones that we least expect. If Eisenberg can capture the essence of the comic book version of the diabolical genius, we could be in for a shock and his portrayal could become iconic.
