8 Directors Who Should Make Ghostbusters 3

7. Jason Reitman

Another no-brainer, but for significantly different reasons: Ivan and Jason Reitman are - as you might have guessed - father and son filmmakers, and who better to follow in the former's footsteps than his own progeny? The younger Reitman has carved out a wonderful little niche in Hollywood over the past decade or so, producing, directing and often writing small, smart indie comedies with wry humour and big hearts. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Well, except for the 'indie' part, but I'm certain Reitman wouldn't shrink at the sight of a slightly bigger budget than he's used to. A Jason Reitman Ghostbusters III would likely be a little more cerebral than the previous instalments and would no doubt include a pithy yet wistful voiceover from Bill Murray, detailing how much he loves busting ghosts and ain't afraid of them, but with a distinct sense that he needs more in his life than just the much-too-brief thrill of successfully saving a tenement building from a poltergeist infestation, a la Thank You For Smoking and Up In The Air. Oh, and he'd probably be able to get Jason Bateman in it as one of the leads' offspring, which as an idea is awesome on at least three different levels. So Reitman Jr. has the comedy and the characters down, but what about the action and effects? Well, he's an unknown quantity as far as blockbuster set-pieces are concerned, but between having a hand in the supernatural black comedy Jennifer's Body and his dad being on board in a supervisory role, Reitman should be confident in his abilities to rise to the challenge.
