8 Film Musicals For People Who Don't Like Musicals

7. Tenacious D And The Pick Of Destiny (2006)

Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny tells the story of two rockstar-wannabe slackers (Black and his long time partner in crime Kyle Gass), who set out on a quest to steal a mythical guitar pick said to give its owner unprecedented musical prowess... by harnessing the power of Satan. This movie is Black's love letter to heavy metal. Mostly composed by The D, the tracks are an enjoyable blend of catchy tunes, crude lyrics, and in-your-face comedy €“ "I did not mean to blow your mind, but that sh*t happens to me all the time". And they deliver each song with supreme - chicken supreme in fact - talent. One of the best bits is the movie's opening "Kickapoo", is when a Dio poster comes to life to tell a young Jack Black to leave his strict Christian parents - who see his passion for heavy metal as a mortal sin - and seek superstardom in Hollywood. You don't have to be a Jack Black fan to enjoy this movie. But there is a lot of low-brow humour and exultant swearing. The Pick of Destiny is less an epic story than an assembly of fart jokes and a hail of F-bombs. But what can you expect when the lead characters are two stoners who have named their band after the birth mark on their buttocks? When the mysterious legend of the pick is told in a cupboard by Ben Stiller in a fright wig and leather vest, you know the movie doesn't take itself seriously. However, The Pick of Destiny is not an easy cash-in on the fans of the original HBO TV spots. There is a real feeling of sincerity to the project, with a couple of surprisingly sweet moments where the friendship between KG and JB really shines through. The Pick of Destiny is a goofy musical adventure, low on IQ, but big on spirit.
