8 Horror Movie Fan Theories That Make The Films Even Creepier

7. Childs Is The Monster Because He Drank Gasoline - The Thing

The closing scene from John Carpenter's The Thing was only recently surpassed by Inception as The Most Infuriatingly Ambiguous Movie Ending Of All Time. This, of course, is by design.

After spending the entire movie watching the creature strategically shape-shift its way through a murder spree, it finally comes down to Childs (David) and MacReady (Kurt Russell) waiting it out in sub zero temperatures until one of them reveals itself to be the shape-shifting monster. While they do this, they share a bottle of scotch.

The Theory: Or is it scotch? We'd just watched MacReady make Molotov cocktails using the same type of bottle he hands Childs. It's likely that MacReady was testing his pal to see if he was sitting across from The Thing.

And Childs failed miserably. Ask anyone who's ever accidentally tasted gasoline: it's not a pleasant taste. But Childs didn't even flinch or gag after taking a swig. That's because The Thing would have no reference point for what scotch or gasoline tastes like and it wouldn't know the difference.

Plus, just as a bonus clue, as soon as Childs takes a drink from the bottle, the music score rises again. Throughout the movie, the score had been an indicator of some bad stuff about to go down.
