8 Movies You Wrongly Thought Were Sequels

2. The Evil Dead II

There has been some debate for years over the true nature of The Evil Dead II, with a fairly loud thread of fans refusing to accept that it is anything other than a sequel. Sure, it retreads the same ground, they'll say, but it's different ENOUGH to consider it a straight sequel to the first after the first 7 minutes that are just a recap of what came before.

And that justification works if you want it to, but the reality is that The Evil Dead II is basically a redo from a clean slate, with the recap wiping out the need to watch the first film (how many sequels have such a lengthy recap opening?) and inconsistencies suggesting its events possibly didn't happen. For instance, where are the dead bodies around the cabin?

It was all down to rights issues, so it's odd that anyone involved in the second film would ever bother trying to defend the first one. Even Bruce Campbell calls it a "requel", whatever the hell that means.
