8 Upcoming Movies No One Asked For (But Will Probably See)

Sony is implementing its plan to either compete with, or join, the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of Venom. The film starring Tom Hardy is the first in what the studio has dubbed Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters (catchy). Venom isn't exactly a critical darling, but it figures to be one of the highest grossing films of the fall season.

With such a disparity in reception and revenue, something will eventually have to give and much will depend on the studio's second outing. As of today, that is Morbius the Living Vampire, with the movie featuring the lesser-known Spider-Man villain announced in November of last year.

The character of Dr. Michael Morbius will be played by Jared Leto, whose portrayal of the Joker was met with widespread criticism. Not only did no one ask for more comic book characters in the hands of Leto, a universe surrounding Spider-Man villains with no Spider-Man just seems off.

In fairness to Leto, bringing a vampire to life seems to be more up his alley than a Hot Topic version of the Joker. If you happened to see Dallas Buyers Club, he proves he can play tragic figures very well. It is also a positive that marginal characters like Morbius are getting highlighted, even if it is due to limited alternatives.

Sony will likely be at a crossroads after Venom. Unless it results in a 2015's Fantastic Four level disaster, fans will definitely give the studio another chance.
