8 Weird Directions The Comic Book Movie Genre Could Take

Alternative timelines, what ifs and old man superheroes... The future of the superhero movie?

With the marketplace continuously flooded with superhero movies year in year out, the genre is in very real danger of reaching saturation point. To avoid going stale and turning audiences away creators will eventually have to look towards different storytelling innovations in order to keep the cycle relevant, intriguing and surprising. It's either that or the genre will be at risk of regurgitating the same material over and over again. This is not to say that gimmicks and cynical marketing strategies should now be employed to maintain interest in the genre but rather that some of the same kind of vibrant and colourful techniques that have been used to keep comics fresh over the years can now also be applied to film and television. Some of the suggestions on this list may seem to be too far-out and eccentric but some of them are not beyond the realms of possibility and suggest a few potential directions in which the genre could head. That is if they don't just keep rolling out origin film reboots every 4 to 5 years...
