RoboCop is Jesus? Not as dumb as it sounds.

The Internet has given people the world over a voice to use how they wish, those most of us use it to spread cat memes or dumb fan theories about beloved movies.

Fan theories have risen in popularity in the last few years, and can offer fascinating readings of classic movies (Cobb’s wedding ring is his dream totem) or make silly claims based on flimsy evidence (Max is really the Feral Kid!). It's all in the good fun, though, and most people are wise enough to take them with a grain of salt.

Once in a while one of these readings will be right on the money, however, with either the creators confirming a theory is correct or a later sequel validating it. In a couple of cases the makers will like a theory so much they’ll add it to canon, which has to make whoever came up with it feel pretty damn smug.

The following is a list of popular fan theories that were later endorsed by the creators, which range from fascinating to outright silly.

8. The Engineers Created The Aliens - Alien

The Alien series has a rich mythology for fans to dig into, and there's no mystery more intriguing than the Space Jockey body from the original. This giant figure was the pilot of the derelict ship, who died from a chest buster following a crash landing.

Various theories about its origins were explored in comics and spin-off novels, with each offering a unique take on the creature’s backstory. Ridley Scott always mentioned wanting to go back and explore the history of the character and supported the idea the Space Jockey and his kind created the alien.

Scott finally got his wish with Prometheus, which redubbed the creature the Engineer. His kind created the human race, and their tampering with different life forms led to a disaster on the planet seen in the film.

At the end, an Engineer even gives birth to a prototype alien called The Deacon, and this creature will no doubt play a role in forthcoming sequel Alien: Covenant.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
