9 Major Cinematic Milestones That Happened By Complete Accident

The Godfather

A movie set is typically run not unlike a military operation; it has to be precise, kept to a certain schedule, and above all else avoid any potential unforseen factors that might cause accidents. That said, these 9 films have, through completely blind, dumb luck, fashioned some of the most memorable and iconic cinematic moments of all time. Whether it's a technical standard, a memorable character or an iconic moment that has been parodied ever since, these movies did more with their accidents than most tend to with their intentions. It is simply a case of an actor or director thinking quickly and realising they've struck gold before it's too late. Here are 9 major cinematic milestones that happened, would you believe it or not, by complete accident...

9. Woody Allen's Allergies Write His Funniest Gag

Easily the funniest scene of Woody Allen's near-fifty-year-long filmography for me is the classic scene in Annie Hall in which he, while partying with Annie and some of her friends, decides to snort some cocaine. After discovering that he's holding about $2000 worth of the stuff in his palm, he shovels a little up his nose, and promptly sneezes, sending the narcotic contents flying into the air. If you look carefully, you can see the genuine reaction of Diane Keaton, seemingly exasperated and amused all at once. Indeed, Allen sneezing was not at all scripted, but a genuine reaction of the man's nostrils to whatever that definitely-not-cocaine-honest substance was. However, the writer-director-lead heard such strong feedback on the take when it was test-screened in the movie that he didn't dare cut it from the picture. The result? One of the funniest scenes in not just an Allen film, but in any film.
